LIFE Nirvana

New technology for the bioremediation of contaminated aquifers within the framework of the LIFE Nirvana project

Nirvana is a European project co-funded by the LIFE Programme that aims to address the environmental issue of groundwater pollution by developing an innovative, effective and sustainable technology for in situ remediation of nitrate polluted aquifers.

Smallops collaborated on the LIFE Nirvana project, which used OPS (carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles) to decontaminate aquifers.

The solution involves injecting small amounts of zero-valent iron nanoparticles into the aquifer to convert nitrate into N2, a harmless gas that ends up in the atmosphere.

Funding entity: European Commission LIFE program.

Period: 2019 – 2022
