It all started with a birthday greeting between Rubén Escudero and Iñigo Monreal. A call that ultimately transformed into the beginning of an entrepreneurial adventure that, two years later, would give rise to Smallops, a startup dedicated to the reuse of olive oil waste to produce biogas and carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles.

María Jara, a key player in the project with experience in environmental projects, also joined the story. While Rubén was working on his final degree project—designing a plant to produce nanoparticles with applications such as water treatment—Íñigo Monreal and María Jara were planning a prospecting trip to India and China. The initial motivation was to explore how these nanoparticles could help solve public health problems related to water quality. However, during their first market analysis in India and China, they realized that the road would not be easy.
