Smallops – Nanotechnology to End Waste
Olive oil production in Spain generates approximately ten million tons of waste, and the national waste management capacity is around six million tons.
“At Smallops, we are dedicated to the recovery of this waste. With our technology, we produce biogas exclusively from olive oil waste, a process in which we also produce zero-valent iron nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) techniques with up to six environmental applications, most notably for water treatment, biogas production, and fertilizers. This technique allows for the creation of nanoparticles at a low cost compared to other metal nanoparticle production techniques,” explains Íñigo Monreal, founder, along with María Jara and Rubén Escudero, of this company, which is working to close its first round of investment.
